As a mom to two children; a boy age 9 and a girl, age 6, I know how fleeting time is. I cherish the family portraits I have had commissioned by various photographers. They capture a moment in time that hold profound memories and emotions. They capture the giggles, connection and inside jokes that only our family knows. They show how little or big my children have gotten and how quickly it will all change again next year.
I also know firsthand the stresses of getting ready before a family portrait session. I can now empathize with the panic a mom often feels as she gets her own children ready for one of my family sessions. I can now understand why she might feel a little frazzled when she first gets out of the car and how quickly she can feel calm and excited once we get started.
A family portrait session for me is about connection and having fun. I want my clients to feel at ease. I have a plan on how things will unfold. I know children can be shy at first and take a little coaxing. I know it’s best to first capture the youngest child’s portraits on their own while they are still fresh.
I look for the best lighting and the best locations. For some clients. Vernon is a vacation destination and they want to capture a bit of that care free attitude. For others, it is home and they want to showcase some of their favourite places and why they call it home.
What ever the reason for commissioning a family portrait, I think it is all pretty magical.
