Family Portraits are especially meaningful for me when I am taking portraits of someone near and dear to me.
Back in 2006 I met Greg while working onboard a Carnival Cruise ship. I was instantly drawn to his wit and charm and we became friends quickly. I was thankful for his friendship while I navigated a new career and was feeling lonely while being away from family and friends. When not working endless hours, we would watch movies, order room service, go on excursions and hang out on Caribbean beaches. A great life to say the least. I was so sad the day I was transferred to another ship as I wasn’t sure when I would see my friend again. We managed to see each other one time after that but we lost track of each other.
About a year ago, I found him on Facebook. I was thrilled to hear he had met Rachel and together they were building a beautiful life for themselves. Rachel and Greg had grown up blocks from each other in Phoenix but had only met through mutual friends a few years ago.
When my husband and I were making Spring Break plans for us and our family this year, one of the areas we had always wanted to see was the Grand Canyon. Phoenix was the perfect jumping off point for the trip and I excitedly told Greg I would finally be making it down to his home town.
For two wonderful days, our families got acquainted with each other. Jack, our son loved playing with Brody (also in Grade 2) and we had a blast exploring the Phoenix Zoo, swimming in our hotel pool and going to the Olive Garden.
Of course I had to get this gorgeous family in front of my camera and I am so glad they gave in to all my persistence.
We had had a long day at the zoo, but with Papago Park being right next door, we took advantage of its’ beautiful scenery. I am amazed they all managed to stay so clean for their portraits after a fun day of looking at all the animals!
Greg and Rachel, it was such a memorable part of our trip to meet your beautiful family and see such a dear friend after so many years. You are a beautiful and joyous family and I hope it doesn’t take another 11 years before we see each other again!

What a fun filled day of zoo animals, lasting long friendships, and a photo shoot with the families. Renee, not only are you an amazing person and friend, but clearly outstanding photographer. You made a somewhat camera shy guy have a blast. Thank you million times! Now it’s our turn to visit and beat this desert heat.
Greg, I am so thankful for your friendship over the years, and to have a chance to photograph your beautiful family was a highlight of my trip to Arizona! I told you you would be great in front of the camera 🙂
What a sweet family. And that baby! She’s a doll!
You’re in my backyard practically! So fun 😉
